Fruity math (Posted on 2003-02-17) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Using only the digits 0-9, but not 3 or 5, solve for each letter:

GRAPE - PLUM = APPLE

You can only use one digit for each letter.

GRAPE or APPLE
- PLUM + PLUM
APPLE GRAPE

M is obviously 0, because E - M = E

A = G-1, so (A,G)=(1,2)(6,7)(7,8)or(8,9)

P+P Obviously carries, so P = 6,7,8,9

But if P=9, then P+L = some number, carry a one, P+P+1 would equal 1P. So P = 8,7 or 6. From here I plugged a few for the AG thing I talked about before and came up with the answer.

94872-7160=87712
GRAPE-PLUM=APPLE
