What happened in the middle of the twentieth century that will not happen again for 4,000 years ?

Note that the 1's in this font do not look the same rightside up as upside down. Therefore, 1961 only reads the same both ways if the 1's are written as a straight line. Thus this problem is font specific.

As long as font plays a role in the solution to this puzzle, I propose that it be solved by calculator (with seven-segment digital display).

My calculator tells me that last year was the first year after 1961 to read the same rightside up and upside down, and that the next year in which this will happen is 2112.
