Four Tangent Circles (Posted on 2003-10-20)

Four circles are tangent to each other and to a triangle that surrounds them, as shown in the figure. Each of the three circles in the corners have a radius of 1 cm. What is the radius of the circle in the middle?

My solution

Well I thought that if you got a ruler and measured the actual sizes like that it would be easier.

The little circles had a radius of .7cms and the big one had a radius of 1cm.

So if the small ones are 1cm and the big circle is .3cms bigger,

1 + .3cms

= 1.3cms <---my answer (I think I got it wrong)
