There can't be daughters and sons, because the sons would have more sisters than the daughters, and vice versa. If the mother had 0 daughters, then she could have any number of sons. That could not have been the case, as the friend wouldn't know the number of sons. If she had N daughters (N being any positive integer), the daugters would have N-1 sisters. If there was sons too, they would have N sisters. So the mother had no sons, but we do not know how many daughters she had.
