If X had played the opposite corner, what would you say?
This solution assumes that both players are rational, and thus wouldn't willingly play so as to lose. If you start playing on a corner, the only possible answer is the center; any other play will lose. Thus, if X went first, O didn't play rationally; we conclude that O went first.
In the second case, we would conclude that the players aren't rational!
