No colors known? (Posted on 2004-08-04) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A friend told me about a chess game he had seen. At certain moment, the only pieces on board were a Queen at h8, a Rook at g6, and the Kings at h6 and g8. He didn't remember what color was each piece, but it can be worked out... how?

If the Rook had been at g7, what would have been the colors?

Both Kings cannot be in check, so one is in double check by Rg6 and Qh8 -- the only possibility is that the last move was g7xh8=Q+, so Kh6, Qh8 and Rg6 are White, and Kg8 is Black.

In the second case, the only possibility is that the last move was h7-h8=Q+, with Kg8, Qh8 and Rg7 being White, and Kh6 Black.
