Möbius chess (Posted on 2005-10-27) Difficulty: 1 of 5

This chess board is on a Mobius strip. The length is infinite (and wraps) but the width is only four squares. There are no pieces on the hidden sides, which also mean the board is not transparent. Some of the pieces are hard to read: the White Queen is on top, the White King is on the left, and the Black King and Queen are on the right. The Black Pawn walks downwards and pawns can't queen.

White to move and win.

To explain this more clearly I'll refer to the top, left, and right boards even though they're really all part of the same board.

The White Queen (on top) goes to the right, flips to the back of the right board (second-to-top row), flips to the front of the left board (second-to-bottom row), flips to the back of the top board (second-to-bottom row), flips to the front of the right board (second-to-bottom row), and takes the Black Knight next to the Black King, checking the King. The King can't capture the Queen because the Queen is protected by the White Knight. The Bishop can't capture the Queen because it's pinned by the White Rook on the left board.
The Black King must capture the White Knight.
The White Rook on the top board goes to the left and continues until it captures the Black Queen, mating the Black King.
