Bouncy Bouncy Part 1 (Posted on 2006-02-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Part 1: Laser

A laser is fired at a flat mirror.

The laser beam starts at the point (0,5) following the equation y = 5 - x/3 heading down to the right.
The mirror follows the equation y=x/2.

Find the equation for the path the beam takes after it hits the mirror.

The simplest solution for part 1 is as follows:
Graph the laser and mirror lines.
Take the point (0,5) and reflect it over the mirror to the point (4,-3).
The line and mirror cross at (6,3) so the path required passes through (4,-3) and (6,3) and has equation y = 3x - 15

I didn't realize I had picked such a convenient angle between the beam and mirror. This method is independant of the angle.
