Japanese village (Posted on 2006-03-01) |
|
There is a certain village in Japan, situated in a very low valley, and yet on the Spring Equinox, the sun is nearer to the inhabitants at noon, by 3,000 miles and upwards, than when it either rises or sets. In what part of the country is the village situated?

The original red herring was that there is nothing special about this village. The additional red herring about the equinox backfired for the reasons made clear by Charlie.
The intended solution was that all points on the earths surface, apart from the poles, are closer to the sun at midday than at dawn or dusk due to the rotation of the earth.
Charlie also introduced the interesting problem of calculating the latitudes for which the result holds at particular times of year. The reader should also note that the summer and winter solstices do NOT correspond to the dates when the earth is closest to or furtherest from the sun. |
