I clean up all your mess

I'm needed to brighten the way.

You'll hate to have to use me
But yet, your tool, I'll soon be.
For eventually, I'll be at your hand
To preserve the state of your homeland.

What am I? (hint: you "pull my leg" and "use my head")

A broom. Hope the riddle didn't sweep anyone away. A mop is also acceptable, as well as any cleaning device on a stick.
