Six Items Problem (Posted on 2006-11-14) Difficulty: 3 of 5
More than a decade ago, six individuals purchased six items from a garage sale, with each individual buying precisely one item.

Ms.Grant found a clothing item. A gentleman who had searched for years bought an old dresser. Everyone was happy to have saved money.

Determine from the following clues who bought what and what were the original price and the purchase price of each item.Names of the individuals, items purchased, price paid for each item and the original price are also given below, but not necessarily in that order.

Names of the individuals: Ms.Grant, Mr.Parker, Mr. Sanderson, Ms. Carter, Ms.Hinds, Mr. Hamill.
Item purchased: Dress, Sweater, Dresser, Telephone, Tires, Bicycle
Original price: $2, $15, $3, $20, $9, $12.
Price paid: $8, $6, $12, $10, 75 cents, 50 cents.

CLUES:

1. The bicycle was bought at 50% off. The buyer's surname starts with H.
2. Ms. Carter bought the item priced at $15.00 for 4/5ths that amount.
3. The tires were sold for $1.00 less than the asking price.
4. Mr. Sanderson did not buy the telephone.
5. The item that sold for $0.50 was an article of clothing.
6. Mr. Parker spent $4.00 less than Ms. Carter.
7. Ms. Hinds paid for her dress with a $20.00 bill and received $19.25 in change.
8. Ms. Grant spent less for her item than Mr. Sanderson, who spent less than Mr. Parker.
9. The item originally priced the highest didn't sell for the highest price, nor did the lowest priced item sell for the lowest amount.
