The first group of words can be formed by concatenating 2-letter postal state abbreviations. The second group can be formed by concatenating the symbols for chemical elements.

The last group uses both states and elements. They can be chosen in only one way, and if a digit 1 represents an element and a digit 0 represents a state, then the sequence is:

1, 1, 10, 11, 101, 1000, 1101

This is the Fibonacci series in binary. The next would be 10101, or three elements and two states, alternating. That's CORRECTS: Carbon, Oregon, Rhenium, Connecticut and Sulfur.
