Tough Puzzle (part 2) (Posted on 2007-08-16) Difficulty: 4 of 5
A friend told me to solve TOUGH+TOUGH+TOUGH+TOUGH=PUZZLE, and when I asked for some help, he told me that even if he let me know any of the digits of PUZZLE, I wouldn't be able to solve this. I'm glad he's not an expert in Logic, because what he told me let me deduce the solution. What's the answer?

This metalogic puzzle is entirely the work of Federico Kereki, to whom all credit goes.

   TOUGH
   TOUGH
   TOUGH

  PUZZLE

Here are the six solutions to the puzzle.

37524*4=150096
79152*4=316608
80294*4=321176
87524*4=350096
92785*4=371140
94715*4=378860

FK's friend, however is seeking just one of them.

Here is how FK worked it out.

P must be 3 (since P=1 would produce a single solution); likewise, U must be 5 or 7, Z must be 0 or 1, L must be 9, and E must be 0 or 6: the only solution that fits all of these conditions is 87524*4=350096.
