Why not marry? (Posted on 2016-10-19) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In all 50 states, it’s legal for second cousins to marry. So can third cousins, fourth cousins, and cousins of any higher degree.
Alex(26,male) and Zelda(23,female) are third cousins, but cannot marry.
Why?

If they were not related, they would be perfectly eligible.

I really fail to see how it could be more simple than the solution I offered (namely Alex and Zelda are also 1st cousins).  So I did some googling and based on the source quoted, the "official" solution is that they are brother sister (parents are legally married second cousins).

My questions is how this would qualify as more simple than my solution?  As far as I can tell they are variants of the same solution.  That being Alex and Zelda are related in a way other than 3rd Cousins which restricts them from being married.

I'm really interested to hear how my solution did not "come close" to the official solution.
