Mobile screen brightness easily auto-adjusts in a variety of conditions so that it remains easily visible. However, if the screen faces the sun, the objects on the screen become difficult to discern with the human eye.

What could be the reason that best explains this phenomenon?

The brightness can auto-adjust but only to a point.  Sunlight is very bright compared to any indoor conditions.  Our irises can handle a larger range of brightnesses than the screen.  The screens can get very dim in low light conditions but they can only get so bright.  Not bright enough to compete with direct sunlight.
