Find the sum of the squares of the numbers (without finding the numbers themselves.)

What I have noticed

x+y=1

(1/x)+(1/y)=1

(x/xy)+(y/xy)=1

xy=1

y=1/x

x+(1/x)=1

This has no solutions in real numbers, so I have noticed that x and y are not real.
