Prime or Composite? (Posted on 2022-11-27) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Each of p and 8p -1 is a prime number.

Is 8p+1 a prime number?

  • If so, provide an example.
  • If not, prove it.
Computer program and spreadsheet aided methodologies are welcome, but an analytical solution is preferred.

*** Adapted from a problem appearing in a Russian Mathematical Olympiad.

A prime number only has two factors: one and itself. A composite number is made up word wipe of at least three components, and occasionally many more.
