Ryan was a wealthy customer in a restaurant. Sitting in his table he asked a waiter for a juice glass, a dinner plate, water, a match, and a lemon wedge. The man poured enough onto the plate to cover it.
"If you can get the water on the plate into this glass without touching or moving this plate, I will give you $100," Ryan said, "You can use the match and the lemon to do this."
A few minutes later, the waiter walked away with $100 in his pocket.
How did the waiter get the water into the glass?
The principle is to heat the air inside the glass either before or during the time the glass is touching the water.
For example, light the lemon wedge using the match, place the burning lemon peel into the glass which warms the glass and the air inside it. Once heated, the glass is placed upside down on the plate. As the air inside the glass cools, the water will be sucked up into the glass.
Alternatively, the lemon wedge might be placed on the wet plate and then set aflame provided enough peel protrudes from the water; then place the glass over the lemon wedge.
