Like Clockwork (Posted on 2004-02-27) Difficulty: 4 of 5
A clock's minute hand has length 4 and its hour hand length 3.

What is the distance between the tips at the moment when it is increasing most rapidly?

You do need calculus to get the maximum or minimum.

Figured out d as a function of time

I just filled 2 sheets of paper with formulae for d, d', and d"
set d" to zero.

I came up with a time of about 2:23 and a distance of 4.551
