The conductor lives between New York and Columbus but Mr. Robins lives in New York. Hence, Mr. Robins cannot be the conductor's neighbor.
Mr. John earns $20,000 which does NOT correspond to a multiple of 3. Therefore, he cannot be the conductor's neighbor.
Therefore, Mr. Smithe must be the conductor's neighbor, Hence, it follows that Mr. John is the passenger who lives in Columbus. Hence, it follows that Mr. John is the passenger who lives in Columbus. Accordingly, the conductor must be John. The fireman cannot be John or Smithe, hence he is Robin's.
Consequently, the Engineer must be Smithe.
