Riddle of Scorn (Posted on 2004-06-01) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Thousands of us all around you.
We protect you all the time,
Yet you treat us badly...

You burn us in public buildings
to make you seem better;

You try to make us straight,
but most of us refuse usually;

When we are dead, you are pleased.
Yet, when we are gone, you are sad.

What are we?

First line: “Thousands of us all around you.”

Explanation: We know that: “The average number of hairs on a human head varies from 98,000 (red-heads) to 120,000 (blondes). Each grows at the rate of 5-10 mm/0.2-0.4 in per month, lengthening for about three years before being replaced by a new one.”

Second line: "We protect you all the time"

Explanation: We know that: “The Integumentary System is the organ system that protects the body from damage, comprising the skin and its appendages[1](including hair, scales, and nails)”.

Third, fourth and fifth lines:

"Yet you treat us badly...
You burn us in public buildings
to make you seem better"

Explanation: We know that: “Unlike other animals, human beings of many cultures cut their hair, rather than letting it grow naturally. A haircut normally describes cutting head hair[?], rather than other body hair such as pubic, facial or underarm hair[?].”

Sixth and seventh  lines

"You try to make us straight,
but most of us refuse usually;"

This refers to the difficulty experienced by an individual in combing the hair.

Eighth line:

"When we are dead, you are pleased."

Obviously a good haircut in accordance with the specification leads to satisfaction and thus pleasure to the concerned individual.

Ninth line:

"Yet, when we are gone, you are sad."

Obviously when an individual gets older, his hairline becomes thinner  and the individual finally becomes bald. This state certainly causes sadness to the concerned individual.
