Four Weights (Posted on 2004-07-25) Difficulty: 3 of 5
You have 4 weights weighing 2,3,5 and 7 pounds. The problem is none of them are marked. What is the fewest number of weighings you need using a balance scale figure out which weights are which?

Weigh any 2, place the heaviest on the right, and the lightest on the left.
repeat the above with other 2 weights,
Now weigh the 2 heaviest, place the heaviest on the far right, this weighs 7 pounds, the other weighs 5.
Now weigh the 2 lightest, place the lightest on the far left, this weigh 2 pounds, the other weighs 3.

total = 4 weighings
