Which of the following words is the best fit to continue the sequence?

orchard
malaise
essence
thieving
sporadic
rhapsody
ivory

A flaw in an otherwise brilliant plan:

The last word is sovereign.  A nine letter word.

You only get seven letter tiles at a time in Scrabble, so you could only make this word if you use two tiles already on the board.

Checking the possible boards for the first 6 words there are 10 possible boards.  Unfortunately, none of them allows soveriegn to be played. 

I could imagine making a good puzzle of this, though.  The ground rules would have to be spelled out more explicitly, though.
