Lemonade (Posted on 2005-07-26) Difficulty: 3 of 5
You have 3 unmarked pitchers that hold 6 cups, 10 cups, and 15 cups. The 10 cup pitcher is filled with lemonade, but you have to dilute it so people at the party don't complain that it's too sour. Unfortunately, I have, in the name of logic, broken your only measuring cup.

How can you dilute the lemonade to 20 cups such that all of the lemonade is of equal concentration? You have a sink with unlimited water, but you can't waste any lemonade. Try using as few moves as possible.

THE OBJECT HERE IS TO CREATE A 5 CUP PITCHER. THEREFORE, POUR THE 10 CUPS OF LEMONADE INTO THE 15 CUP PITCHER AND MARK IT'S LEVEL. POUR THE LEMONADE BACK INTO THE 10 CUP PITCHER. FILL THE 15 CUP PITCHER WITH WATER AND FILL THE 6 CUP PITCHER FROM IT UNTIL IT CONTAINS 5 CUPS OF WATER (UNTIL THE WATER LEVEL IN THE 15 CUP PITCHER IS DOWN TO THE MARK). EMPTY THE 15 CUP PITCHER AND PUT IN THE 5 CUPS OF WATER FROM THE MARKED 6 CUP PITCHER. ADD LEMONADE TO THE 10 CUP MARK (NOW A 50% DILUTION). ADD WATER TO THE REMAINING 5 CUPS OF LEMONADE IN THE 10 CUP PITCHER UNTIL IT IS FULL(NOW ALSO A 50% DILUTION). STIR WELL AND ENJOY!
