What force and strength cannot get through
I with a gentle touch can do,
And many in the street would stand,
Were I not a friend at hand

Perhaps:
The force is speed and the strength is musculature in one's legs-- OR the force and strength in a herd of impatient people.
The 'friend' is the pedestrian walk button
found in larger cities.
So, basically your legs are not going to carry you through heavy traffic alone without some serious risk. Instead, you need some assistantce and with a gentle touch you push the button. If instead, you and your peers had to wait for traffic to clear, you all could be standing there for a potentially long time.
