Pushing Numbers 2 (Posted on 2007-05-22) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Here is the first part of Pushing Numbers.

You need to make it so that all the numbers from 1 to 8 appear once in every row and column. You can only do that by "pushing" the columns down and the rows left. Each time you "push" a row or a column all the numbers in it move one block in the direction you have pushed it.

There are 12! / (6 x 2!) = nearly 40 million different ways to push the 12 rows and columns into the square (39,916,800, to be exact). (Is my math right, there?)  With no significant progress so far, it looks like it may be time to attack this one with a computer...
