All Wrong at the Olympic Games (Posted on 2007-06-15) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In the marathon, all the competing countries were from Africa, but not the usual runners, and maybe that caused all prognostics on the race results to be wrong:

1) Algeria will not win the gold, nor Botswana the silver.
2) Chad will win a medal, and Djibouti will not.
3) Djibouti and Egypt will both win medals.
4) Djibouti will not win the silver, nor Egypt the bronze.
5) Algeria will win a medal, and Chad will not.

Who won which of the medals?

Hints/Tips re: Doesn't 3 counter 2? | Comment 13 of 14 |
(In reply to Doesn't 3 counter 2? by caroline)

3 does not exactly counter 2, but it does eliminate some of the possibilities.

Taking each individual statement, with knowing each prognostic was wrong, we can re-word each of the two statements as such:

2.
a) Both Chad & Djibouti win medals - OR
b) Neither Chad nor Djibouti win medals - OR
c) Chad does NOT win a medal & Djibouti does

3.
a) Djibouti wins a medal & Egypt does NOT - OR
b) Djibouti does NOT win a medal & Egypt does - OR
c) Neither Djibouti nor Egypt win medals

You can see that the following statements do NOT 'counter' each other: 2a & 3a; 2b & 3b; 2b & 3c; and 2c & 3a.  Only the following possiblities are eliminated: 2a & 3b; 2a & 3c; 2b & 3a; 2b & 3b; 2c & 3b; and 2c & 3c.  With the combined statements we know one of the following is true:

a) Chad & Djibouti each win a medal & Egypt does NOT - OR
b) Chad & Djibouti each do NOT win a medal & Egypt does - OR
c) Chad, Djibouti & Egypt do NOT win medals - OR
d) Chad & Egypt do NOT win a medal & Djibouti does
