This riddle originates in the "Riddles in the Dark" chapter of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien. In this chapter, Bilbo Baggins and Gollum test their wits by positing five riddles to each other. If Gollum wins, Bilbo will be killed and if Bilbo wins, Gollum must show him the way out of the tunnel.

This enigma is the very first riddle, that is , Riddle #1 that Gollum asked Bilbo.
