When my family decided to tour the states of the U.S., we began with New York, Maryland, Georgia, Maine, and then Texas. What were the next two states we visited?

Alphabetical state capitals.

So the next two in the sequence are LA and ND; the capitals of which are Baton Rouge and Bismarck, respectively.
