Fraction Magic Square (Posted on 2004-05-22) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Find a 3x3 magic square composed of distinct proper fractions with no denominator greater than 9.

Note: A proper fraction is a fraction between 0 and 1. A proper fraction is NOT equal to 0 or 1.

Solution A first solution | Comment 1 of 6
5/6 2/9 4/9
1/9 1/2 8/9
5/9 7/9 1/6
This was done mostly through guesswork, but I guess some it comes also from magic square experience (e.g. the middle number is usually in the middle, the highest usually on the side).  I'm going to try and find a magic square using a lower maximum denominator now.
