Balance: "Using a program somewhat defeats the purpose in it, doesn't it?"

On balance, this is what Socrates said about the invention of writing: it was unfortunate, he said, that writing was invented, since it allowed men to cheat by writing things down on paper rather than doing everything in their heads and thereby exercising their powers of concentration and their memories. But if the puzzle had stated: "No computers, logarithm tables, calculators, or even pencil and paper; you must do this entirely in your head, in a Zen meditative trance, eyes closed and breathing from the lower abdomen", would you have tried to solve it that way ?
