A round hole is drilled through the center of a spherical solid with a radius (r). The resulting cylindrical hole has height 4 cm.

a)What is the volume of the solid that remains?

b)What is unusual about the answer?

To address your questions:

  • The radius r refers to the radius of the spherical solid.
  • The round hole is drilled all the way through the sphere.
  • The resulting round hole is a perfect cylinder of unknown radius (no larger than the radius of the original spherical solid), and of height 4cm.
I am not giving any information that is not already in the problem.
