You supposed incorrectly. AWOL and Desertion are two different things.

To summerize Basically:

AWOL means that you left your duties or assignment without permission and returned with or without apprehension(apprehension can be used to support desertion, but it is difficult to prove).  This can include:  not showing up to work on time, or failing to be at your place of duty on time.

Desertion means that you left your duties or assignment without any intention to return, or that you left to avoid hazardous duties (whether you returned after those hazardous duties expired or not), or that you left to join some other force (not the enemy; joining the enemy is considered  treason).

For AWOL the punishments vary greatly depending on the circumstances (ie being late to work is different from missing for 3 days).  I will only list the maximum punishment.

The maximum punishment for AWOL over 30 days is Dishonorable Discharge, Forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 18 months.

The maximum punishment for Desertion during times other than war is Dishonorabel Discharge, Forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 5 years.

The maximum punishment for Desertion during times of war is DEATH!  (Luckily, you can aviod that hard labor.  What a relief.)
