Only One Question (Posted on 2005-02-16) Difficulty: 3 of 5
The following two facts are known about Adam, Bert, and Carl:

1) Of Adam, Bert, and Carl, there is one knight, one knave, and one liar.
2) Adam said once, "Bert said that Carl isn't a knight."

Can you ask one yes/no question to one person and figure out who is who? If not, how many questions must you ask?

I'm not referring to the content of Bert's statement when I mentioned the same version of events.  I'm talking about whether or not he ever made the statement.  That is why I said that we should ask Bert whether or not he ever made the statement that Carl is not a knight.  I did not say that we should ask him whether or not Carl is a knight (the content of his alleged statement).  We are trying to determine whether or not the statement itself was ever made, and from that piece of information, we can isolate the liar.
