But with a diameter of 12 inches, the radius is only 6 inches. Subtract out the 2-inch radius of the unused center and you're left with 4 inches. The smooth outer edge is 1 inch wide, so you're left with only 3 inches. Even if you double it, for the two sides of the record, it's only 6 inches (plus an amount to account for it's being an arc of a circle centered on the pivot of the tone arm, rather than a straight line).
