Sally, Joe, Bob, Fred, and Mary all won a prize in the school lottery. One of them won $500; one of them $196; another won $48; another, $16; and another, $2. Each of the students won in a different month: February, March, September, October, and December. How much money did each student win and in what month?

Clues:

1. At least one of the winners' names begins with the same letter as his or her winning month.

2. The girls won a total less than $250 and more than $205

3. One of the people with the shortest names won the least and the other won the most.

4. Mary won the month before Joe.

5. One of the girls won just in time for Christmas shopping.

6. The March and September winners won the most.

7. Sally won more than Fred

clue 2 = sally and mary are either 196,48,16 but note 196 is a girl and not a man.

clue 3= bob and joe are 500 and 2 in some order. but fred cannot be 196(clue2) therefore he is either 48 or 16

clue 4=mary cannot be dec and joe cannot be feb.

clue 5= a girl has to be dec and there it is sally as clue 4 eliminates mary.

clue 6= mar and sep are 500 and 196 in some order. but dec cannot be 196 and therefore by elimination, mary is 196.

clue 7= as mary is already 196 therefore sally is either 48 or 16(clue2) but since sally won more then fred, sally had to win 48 and therefore fred 16.

At this point clue one leaves fred and mary for feb and mar. and mary is either mar or sep. so lets explore the mary as mar and mary as sep.

mary as mar. therefore joe is sep and 500. bob is 2 dollars and either feb or oct. fred is either feb or oct.

mary as sep. joe is oct and 2 dollars, bob is 500 and mar and by elimination fred is feb.

as option mary is sep the most logical the final solution is:

bob,mar,500

joc,oct,2

fred,feb,16

mary,sep,196; and

sally,dec,48.
