How Fast?!? (Posted on 2005-08-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are driving a 3.2 Litre, V6 car whose engine speed is 3500rpm.

If the piston face diameter is 80mm, then what is the average speed of the piston?

3.2 litres, refers to total piston volume

Since total piston volume is 3.2l and we a a v6 car, each piston has volume of 3.2e-3 / 6  m³.

To find the height of the cylinders we can use volume and base area of piston (which is ð*(40e-3)² m²).

height of cylinder is (3.2e-3/6)/(ð*(40e-3)²)=0.1061 meters.

At each revolution pistons moves up and down, thus at 3500rpm piston travels 0.1061 m 7000 times.

Avr.speed of piston than becomes 0.1061*7000=742.72 m/min or 12.38 m/s.
