What is the shortest game of chess which ends in checkmate with neither player moving a pawn forward? Pawns may be captured.
Since no pawn is moved, the mate could only occur at g7 with a White Knight. Since the Black Bishop will take this Knight, there must be another White Knight at f5 or h5, to take the Black Bishop.
The White QN reaches f5 or g5 in 5 moves, and the KN, in four moves.
So, my first guess is 4 + 5 + 1 (to take the pawn at g7) + 1 (to take the Black Bishop at g7) = 11 moves.
But I have to prevent the defense of f5 and g5 by the Black Knights.
