let me try to explain again my reasoning...

first, try reading the question again without the part between the commas. rearranging the wording of the question without changing the meaning you get:

"A six letter word becomes half of its meaning when you take out its last letter. What word is it?"

the phrase "becomes" signifies that the subject of the sentence, which is "a six letter word", becomes "half its meaning."

                   # of letters                 meaning
DOZENS             6                           not 12
DOZEN      doesn't matter                    12

now the meaning is "12"  so the "six letter word" is half (6) it's meaning (12)

it doesn't say the five letter word's MEANING is half of the six letter word's MEANING. it says the "SIX letter word" IS half of the five letter word's MEANING

i hope that made sense. here's a link to the same question on a different website, but this one has the solution. http://www.allriddles.com/riddle.php?riddleid=211

maybe this question has a different solution, but they are worded exactly the same.

and if it does have a different solution, then there's more than one right answer.
