How Fast?!? (Posted on 2005-08-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are driving a 3.2 Litre, V6 car whose engine speed is 3500rpm.

If the piston face diameter is 80mm, then what is the average speed of the piston?

3.2 litres, refers to total piston volume

3.2l refers to six pistons.  1 piston displaces 3.2/6 = .5333l per rev, which equals 533.333 cm^2 per rev.

Displacemnt of 1 piston = (8.0cm)^2*pi/4 * stroke of piston = 533.333. Solving for stroke:  Stroke = 10.610cm.

The piston travelt this distance twice (up and down) for every one revolution or 21.22 cm/rev.

21.22 cm/rev * 3500 rev/min = average pidston speed = 74272.3 cm/min or 1237,87 cm/sec
