I haven't been working on this too much, primarily because I'm also hitting dead ends. I just can't figure out what the parenthetical numbers mean, or how the z's figure in.
Starting at the first z and proceeding with the usual method just takes through a string of number wormholes and brings you eventually to the second z. Hmm...
