If a stone is dropped from a balloon on a still day, does the stone fall directly below the balloon, or to the west or east of it?

I think the North and South poles are a great idea. However, this leaves only two choices: Down or South (Assume North Pole).

The altitude of the balloon does not have an impact to the result. Infitesimal heights will give similar shifts to the east.
