I saw the list as a chess play notation on the moment I saw it.  I also got te  54 55 notation as the pawns movement and then, considering a four movements solution, I thought of the Scholars move.
From then it went wrong.  I wasn't able to decypher 234, the only thing that seemed to fit was: take the 2nd Bishop and move to position(3,4).  This also works for 235, so I guessed I was on the right track.  But then I got in trouble: the rest was intranslatable.  (Is that an english word?)

Thanks Joe for the nice, original puzzle idea, I enjoyed (trying to) solving it.
