Yes, they do.  Think about the purpose served by the asterisks and parentheses in the first half of the sentence.  Half of them serve this purpose for the first half of the sentence, while the other half serve the same purpose for the second half of the sentence.

The Zs also serve an important purpose, but there are no Zs in the entire sentence.
