Place 4 Kings, 4 Rooks, 2 Knights, and 1 Bishop on a conventional (8x8) chessboard in order that every square, whether occupied or vacant, is under attack.
How about placing 6 Kings, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, and 1 Bishop on the said board, satisfying the same conditions?
Do the kings have to stay out of check?
If you have 2 rooks and 4 kings, that satisfies the problem right there. I think. Rooks cut the board to a 6x6 (36 spaces). Then each king attacks the eight around it plus the one it's on (36 spaces). Then fill in the rest of the pieces to your aesthetic delight.
No?
