Once upon a time . . . (Posted on 2006-04-11) Difficulty: 1 of 5
I represent something

Vast we once were

X never marked a particular spot for us

Merciless we claimed much!

Federico Kereki made a comment about this just before this just before it was published.  He would have liked to have seen a fourth line which began with a "C".

While the letters I, V, X, [C] and M would suggest something Roman,  I look at the pronouns I and we.  I see a collective noun of who, or whatever, the 'we' represents.

Certainly I think Caesar has a place in the solution, but I also think that we could add Atilla, Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great (etc) as "nomadic" conquerers (X does not mark a spot), but I need a collective term which is 'singular'.
