Rupees and Paise (Posted on 2003-03-16) Difficulty: 3 of 5
I entered a store and spent one-half of the money that was in my wallet. When I came out I found that I had just as many paise as I had rupees and half as many rupees as I had paise when I went in.

How much money did I have with me when I entered the store ?

( Given: 1 Rupee = 100 Paise ).

Let R = the number of whole rupees you had to begin with, and P = the number of paise.

1/2 (100R + P) = 50P + R
50R + P/2 = 50P + R
49R = 49.5P
98R = 99P

Since both P and R must be integers 0 ≤ 100, then R=99, P=98

Check: (99.98)/2 = 49.99
