The etymological origin of the word egg is Proto-Germanic
*ajja(m), is probably Proto-Indo-European in origin (about 5500 years ago); and the etymological origin of the word chicken is West Germanic, *kiukinam, (circa 100 B.C.) --- thus, etymologically speaking, the egg preceded the chicken.
