Well this depends on the definition of 'the (chicken) egg'.
If it means 'the egg laid by a chicken', then chicken came first
If it means 'the egg the chicken came from', then it's the egg.
The way I've always remembered it, is that if ducks evolved into chickens, the first chicken came from a duck egg!
Anyway, chickens don't lay eggs, hens do!
...and cockerels lay .... ;)
