No rows (Posted on 2006-10-24) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Using only half of a chess board you may place five queens anywhere. After you place them, I move each queen at most once with standard queen moves. If I make a horizontal five-in-a-row, I win. Can you beat me?

not all chessboards fold horizontally.  So simply fold the chessboard in halve vertically and that would leave horizontal rows of 4, leaving it impossible to make 5, so I would win every time...

the simplest answer is usually the best...

and I wasn't trying to detriment the problem, but if this was actually posed to me as a challenge, I would have done it that way as the rules did not specify I had to fold it horizontally.
